So I've been around the HSotD forums lately, and besides the annoyance that is: every other thread is just a bunch of spoilers I came across people using the word "RAW" multiple times, what is "RAW"? My friend thinks its the original Japanese that some people here read.

If thats so, then how did you people learn Japanese? I've been using Rosetta Stone personally.

In the event it isn't: Huh, thats interesting.

Yes, a raw is a manga in Japanese, or one that is "uncooked" into any other language.

I'm studying Japanese at school right now.

I just flat out taught myself, got some textbooks/dictionaries/etc and had at it...

been quite a few years now, and I'm still at it. Yeah its a true challenge, but its one of the most satisfying things I've ever done.

Rosetta stone is decent, but it will only really help you with vocab. It doesn't cover grammar, or correct usage at all.

Just a tip tho... if you do not know kana (Katakana and Hiragana) STOP NOW!. If you want to get ANYWHERE, you must learn those first. To be blunt, if you cant learn the syllabaries for whatever reason (Not motivated enough, bad at memorizing, whatever) just give up, you will get nowhere fast if you cant get those down.

They only take a few hardcore hours to basicly memorize, but it will take quite a bit of practice to recognize different fonts, and to read quickly.

Japanese is not an easy language, if you aren't dedicated, and don't truly love learning it, it will only be that much harder.

that said, Good Luck~~ you're in for a fun ride ^^

Yeah, because I would often find myself on Rosetta going "wtf does that mean" and "ok, something about a dog..."

If you know some kind of source for good Katakana and Hiragana learning then please post it!

I studied it throughout high school (Las Lomas High School in California) and am now studying it as part of my Language Studies major at the University of California Santa Cruz.

your lucky it's offered at your high school...
I'm stuck trying to learn from e-books and whatever i find at the local library (not much of anything)
granted I have so little time for it I probably wouldn't get far even if i had a lot of books...

Studied a bit of it in one of the community colleges when I moved to Canada from the Philippines...

My Hiragana and Katakana may be a bit rusty now, I plan to review it in summer and perhaps, get back to classes again. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I like how this turned from "What is a RAW?", to "What's the best way to learn Japanese?" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)P
